The Music and Dance Club “New Lefkada Choir” was founded in 1964 with the aim of preserving the Heptanisian musical tradition and contributing to the development and upgrading of the spiritual, artistic and cultural level of Lefkada. The “New Choir of Lefkada” has the following departments: mixed choir, music ensemble, dance (children’s, teenagers, adult beginners and performances). Both the choral and dance departments have participated in many international festivals and have performed a significant number of performances in Greece and abroad (Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, France, Italy, Spain, Malta, Cyprus, etc.). The highlight of the choral department was its participation at the Athens Concert Hall, on 13-01-2018, in the event entitled “The Ionian Islands always sing” where it received excellent reviews. The New Choir of Lefkada is a member of the Greek Choir Association (E.H.E.) and the International Folk Art Organization (D.O.L.T.) – UNESCO and has participated in special broadcasts for Greek, Italian and French television . Every August, he revives the ancestral custom of Varkarola with Heptanisian melodies and cantades and since 1983 he has organized with great success the Panhellenic Choral Festival, with the aim of promoting choral singing. The dance classes teach traditional dances from Lefkada as well as from most regions of Greece. Through Greek traditional dance, children-teenagers and adults come into contact with traditional music, traditional singing, traditional musical instruments, with the customs and traditions of our ancestors, learn about cultural elements and local cultures of other regions and contribute to the preservation and the perpetuation of our popular tradition. Special emphasis is given to the children’s dance departments, where significant progress is made, whose male and female dancers constantly feed the performance department. Every year, at the end of June, the “Traditional dance night” is organized with the participation of all the dance departments of the Club. Mr. Vassilis Bitsis is responsible for teaching dances in the adult and performance classes and Mrs. Penny Tsere is responsible for teaching in the children-adolescent classes.
