The Orfeas Music and Literary of Lefkada was founded in 1937 by a group of prolific young people of the time. Its purpose is to preserve and continue the tradition of the island. It has the following departments: Mixed choir with pre-classical, classical and contemporary repertoire and Mandolin orchestra (orchestra of stringed instruments) since its foundation, and since 2014 a children’s choir.
Workshop for learning musical instruments, teaching piano, guitar, mandolin, violin and accordion.During the winter season the Cinema Club operates with the most important films of the 7th Art.
The Folk Museum of Orpheus is housed in its privately-owned building, with exhibits from the urban and rural life that has passed.
In 1960 they founded the dance section that includes sections of traditional dances for children from 5 years of age and above with thematic performances each June, while the adult dance section (department of performances) makes remarkable performances.
They participated in the 1st INTERNATIONAL FOLKLORE FESTIVAL OF LEFKADA in 1962 and since then continuously until today. They have participated in many Greek festivals as well as abroad in France, Italy, Spain, Great Britain, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Sweden, Yugoslavia, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Turkey, Ukraine, Tunisia and Malta with first prizes, distinctions and flattering comments.
In addition to various activities throughout the year, Orfeas organizes annually the artistic events (concerts of choirs and musical ensembles, the painting exhibition of the Seven Islands) to celebrate the Union of the Ionian Islands with Greece. Each summer they organize the FESTA DEL CANALE , a celebration on the Lefkada canal with urban dances, habits of the Ionian Islands as well as references to everything about island, myth, spectacle !!!
For all this multifaceted action, Orfeas was honored in 1993 with the Athens Academy Award.
